Asbury Ocean Club lands in New Jersey

The Asbury Ocean Club, Surfside Resort and Residences, has made its highly anticipated debut on the shore of Asbury Park, New Jersey. The 17-storey property joins other facilities in the shoreline redevelopment, including the Asbury Hotel and the recently reopened Asbury Lanes. 2017 Platinum Circle winner Anda Andrei led the design of the project alongside New York firms Handel Architects and Bonetti/Kozerski Architecture.

“We opted for an open, light and airy vernacular beach house, and we kept materials simple, concrete and glass with wood accents,” says Handel Architects director Gary Handel. “The balconies extend to accentuate the horizontal quality of the views. We then added a slight curvature to the building to reflect the shoreline.

Residences crown the property above the 54-room boutique hotel concept. Hotel guests and tenants will mingle on the fourth floor, which is home to an expansive terrace and pool overlooking the ocean. The outdoor space will also be outfitted with a full-service bar and grill as well as a gazebo equipped with a reflecting pool and an outdoor lounge area with a fireplace.

In addition to the shops on the ground floor, a double-height entrance hall is fitted with a reception desk and custom polished concrete and oak slat walls. Interiors also include white lacquer cabinetry, engineered hardwood flooring in bleached white oak, stone countertops and polished Marvel Calacatta porcelain walls, and bathrooms with walk-in showers. Among the on-site amenities, the fitness center overlooks the ocean and includes a spa as well as a yoga room and meditation deck. The hotel’s library and games room are equipped with a custom billiards facility, while the exclusive reception room houses a show kitchen.

“It’s impossible to find a place so close to New York, on the ocean, with incredible buildings of great architectural significance, amazing history and soul, and a major music scene,” says Andrei. “With Asbury Ocean Club, we strike a beautiful balance true to beachside living – luxurious without being pretentious, casual yet chic – the elegance of timeless materials in a modern, contemporary setting. It’s unlike anything in the area, the building feels like it belongs on this beach.
